The investigation is the most recent twist in an escalating showdown between Minnesota officers and the administration of President Donald Trump over immigration raids within the state, together with the operation the place an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot useless Renee Good, a mom of three and a US citizen.

Governor Walz confirmed the DOJ investigation in an announcement on Tuesday, describing the transfer as “political theatre”.

“This Justice Division investigation, sparked by requires accountability within the face of violence, chaos and the killing of Renee Good, doesn’t search justice. It’s a partisan distraction,” he mentioned.

In a publish on X, Lawyer Common Ellison mentioned the Justice Division had subpoenaed his workplace for “information and paperwork associated to my workplace’s work with respect to federal immigration enforcement, not for me personally”.

Ellison referred to as the transfer “extremely irregular”, given the timing of the order so quickly after the state filed a January 12 lawsuit towards the Division of Homeland Safety, which oversees ICE and Customs and Border Safety (CBP).

“Trump’s DOJ is extra targeted on investigating my workplace than the killing of Renee Good,” Ellison wrote on X.

“I can’t be intimidated, and I can’t cease working to guard Minnesotans from this marketing campaign of revenge,” he mentioned.

In an announcement saying the federal lawsuit final week, Ellison’s workplace mentioned the ICE raids had been “harmful, unlawful, and unconstitutional stops and arrests, all beneath the guise of lawful immigration enforcement”.

Minneapolis Mayor Frey described the DOJ investigation as an try to intimidate state officers.

Frey’s workplace earlier launched a duplicate of the Justice Division subpoena, which requires “any information tending to indicate a refusal to return to assistance from immigration officers”, in keeping with The Related Press information company.

The paperwork can be reviewed by a grand jury on February 3, which is able to assess whether or not there may be possible trigger to proceed with the lawsuit.

The Division of Homeland Safety launched an unlimited immigration operation to deploy 1000’s of ICE and CBP officers to the Minnesota cities of Minneapolis and St Paul – referred to as the “Twin Cities” – in December, as a part of Trump’s crackdown on undocumented immigrants in Democrat-led cities.

The Minnesota crackdown grew to become international information in early January when an ICE officer shot and killed Good, 37, who was monitoring an immigration raid as a citizen observer. The DOJ has since declined to investigate the shooting regardless of widespread public outrage throughout the nation.

Trump has threatened to make use of the Riot Act towards the state and has readied 1,500 active-duty soldiers in Alaska to organize to deploy to Minnesota to quell potential protest violence, in keeping with a Reuters report, citing unnamed US officers.
