Venezuela and the Dominican Republic have agreed to work in the direction of restoring relations, which had been severed after the Dominican Republic criticised the re-election of former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro as fraudulent.

“This determination responds to the shared curiosity of strengthening institutional channels of communication to profit folks of each international locations,” the ministry stated, calling the settlement the results of “sustained dialogue” between each nations.

The Dominican Republic joined dozens of different international locations in saying that they’d not recognise Maduro’s 2024 re-election amid widespread allegations of fraud from election observers and Venezuela’s political opposition. These elections had been adopted by a lethal government crackdown on ensuing protests. Venezuela reacted by reducing off diplomatic relations with the Dominican Republic.

Maduro was kidnapped by US forces in a military raid on Venezuela in January. The interim authorities in Caracas, led by interim President Delcy Rodriguez, has pursued renewed engagement with previously estranged companions as half of a bigger realignment with US pursuits within the area.

That has included opening up Venezuelan energy sources to US funding and larger entry to different natural resources, reminiscent of minerals, together with nearer ties to Washington.

Venezuela recently announced that it might pull out of the Worldwide Prison Courtroom (ICC), which it accused of bias in opposition to poor and non-Western international locations. The ICC introduced in 2021 that it might examine potential crimes against humanity by the Venezuelan authorities throughout its crackdown on anti-government protests in 2017. Nonetheless, the latest determination coincided with a push by the Trump administration to delegitimise and hobble the worldwide organisation.

Venezuela agreed in February to revive flights between Caracas and Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, together with consular companies.
