TEHRAN: Iran on Saturday (Aug 15) fired again at US President Donald Trump’s claim that he would soon declare the Strait of Hormuz part of US territory, saying the essential power waterway it has blockaded “will stay Iranian”.
Trump has repeatedly insisted that the strait, which Tehran successfully closed firstly of the Center East conflict in late February, is below US management regardless of site visitors remaining throttled.
“The Strait of Hormuz has been Iranian, is Iranian, and can stay Iranian,” Iranian Deputy Overseas Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stated on X.
“This strait will solely be closed and opened below Iran’s command.”
Trump advised a political rally in New York state on Friday that after the US defeats Iran, “fairly quickly I will be declaring the Hormuz Strait a territory of america”.
“It is true,” he added.
An unnamed White Home official later clarified that Trump was joking, the Wall Road Journal reported.
