India’s Ministry of Ports, Delivery and Waterways mentioned a fireplace was reported at round 1.30 pm (4.30 pm, Singapore time) on the MT Marivex, a Palau-flagged tanker.

“There was a fireplace reported on a vessel, MT Marivex, on which there have been 24 Indian seafarers… all Indian seafarers are secure,” ministry director Opesh Kumar Sharma advised reporters.

Photographs posted on social media by the Ahead Seamen’s Union of India confirmed crew members being winched from the vessel by helicopter as thick black smoke billowed from its bridge and lodging cabins.
