Re: “ICE detains Marine Corps veteran’s wife who was still breastfeeding their baby” (June 22, Nation):

The detention by Immigration and Customs Enforcement of a girl with two younger kids, married to a U.S. Marine, is one thing most People will discover merciless and unfair. This lady has no legal report and poses no menace. However her detention follows from our president’s immigration views. Let’s rethink these.

Begin with the phrase “unlawful.” Many individuals conflate this with “immoral” or “evil” — all of it simply means “unhealthy.” However “unlawful” merely means “towards the regulation.” The beer I drank final evening would have been unlawful throughout Prohibition. We determine what’s authorized.

Some crimes categorize an individual (rapist, assassin) whereas others don’t (unlawful parker). Getting into the U.S. with out paperwork is against the law, however this illegality will get conflated with evil.

This image is fake. Most individuals right here illegally got here to construct higher lives for his or her households. They make our lives higher, too.

The act of crossing illegally makes you the form of individual keen, to your kids’s future, to work harmful jobs, dwell in poor situations and threat deportation. Most People acknowledge these as admirable qualities.

Present regulation drives immigrants to interrupt it. Then all of us profit from their work whereas doing little to assist them. That’s what’s really fallacious.
