Re: “Danish official says there’s a ‘fundamental disagreement’ with Trump over Greenland” (Jan. 14, Nation):

The Trump administration is true to acknowledge the strategic significance of the Arctic to nationwide safety, however efforts to purchase or take Greenland by drive are adversarial to our safety and financial system.

Since World Warfare II, the U.S. has had treaties with Greenland that give the U.S. army liberal entry to the island. Notably, the Pituffik House Base (previously Thule Air Base) supplies a key part of the U.S. ballistic missile warning system and is a key transportation hub sustaining allied climate and listening stations at Nord and Canadian Forces Station Alert.

Over the past 45 years, I’ve had the great fortune to make use of every of those bases as jumping-off locations for analysis within the Arctic Ocean, and I’m unceasingly impressed by the Danes’ and Greenlanders’ capabilities in dealing with the intense operational setting and their unfailing assist for our shared mission.

Why does the Trump administration threat this glorious partnership with overbearing and bombastic threats to purchase or take by drive one thing that the Danes and Greenlanders are already giving us freely?

    James Morison, Kirkland
