    Chinese language regulators have barred TikTok-owner ByteDance from deploying Nvidia chips in new knowledge centres.

    The tech publication The Data first reported the event on Wednesday, citing two firm staff.

    ByteDance purchased extra Nvidia chips than some other Chinese language agency in 2025 because it raced to safe computing energy for its billion-plus customers amid considerations the USA may curb provide, in line with the report.

    The reported ban underscores Beijing’s efforts to cut back reliance on US know-how, a marketing campaign that has intensified as Washington tightens curbs on exports of superior semiconductors to China.

    In August, Chinese language regulators requested native companies to halt new orders of Nvidia AI chips and have since pushed corporations to undertake homegrown processors, Bloomberg reported, citing individuals near Chinese language tech regulators.

    Earlier this month, Reuters reported that the Chinese language authorities had issued steerage requiring new knowledge centre tasks which have obtained any state funds to solely use domestically-made synthetic intelligence (AI) chips.

    China is accelerating plans to construct an alternate AI ecosystem and obtain chip self-sufficiency, whilst commerce tensions with Washington stay in a fragile pause.

    Washington has barred gross sales of Nvidia’s most superior chips to China, permitting solely scaled-down versions, such as the H20. Nvidia had launched a China-specific chip, however demand has been tepid, with some main tech companies opting to not place orders.

    Following talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping earlier this month, US President Donald Trump mentioned that Washington will “allow them to take care of Nvidia however not when it comes to essentially the most superior” chips.
