    Bangladesh to hold elections in February 2026: Yunus

    DHAKA: Bangladesh will maintain elections in February 2026, interim chief Muhammad Yunus mentioned on Tuesday (Aug 5), marking the primary polls since a mass uprising overthrew the government final 12 months.

    “On behalf of the interim authorities, I’ll write a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner requesting that the election be organized earlier than Ramadan in February 2026,” Yunus mentioned in a broadcast marking the one-year anniversary of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s ousting.

    The 85-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate is main the caretaker administration as chief adviser till elections are held and has pledged to step down after the vote.

    “We are going to step into the ultimate and most essential part after delivering this speech to you, and that’s the switch of energy to an elected authorities,” he mentioned.

    Yunus had beforehand indicated elections would happen in April, however key political events have demanded an earlier timeline, insisting the vote be held earlier than the Islamic holy month of Ramadan within the Muslim-majority nation of 170 million.

    “I urge you all to hope for us in order that we will maintain a good and easy election, enabling all residents to maneuver ahead efficiently in constructing a ‘New Bangladesh’,” Yunus added.

    “On behalf of the federal government, we’ll prolong all vital help to make sure that the election is free, peaceable and celebratory in spirit.”
