Re: “WA backs off requiring clergy to report abuse learned in confession” (Oct. 10, Native Information):

I really feel a way of betrayal by Gov. Bob Ferguson and Legal professional Basic Nick Brown. We, a corporation known as Catholic Accountability Coalition, fought lengthy and onerous to move Senate Invoice 5375. And we did.

The invoice would have assured mother and father and others that if a toddler shared in confession that she or he was fondled or sexually assaulted by a stranger, priest, relative, mum or dad or buddy, the priest confessor would report this crime to the native police. However the Church didn’t like this final result. It fought and spent parishioners’ cash to guard a priest’s privilege to maintain secret crimes in opposition to youngsters shared in confession.

How ironic to have such a privilege that protects rapists and baby molesters, and irrevocably harms youngsters. I do know as a result of I used to be a kind of youngsters.

    Mary Dispenza, Bellevue
