    Trump announces peace deal between Azerbaijan and Armenia at White House

    WASHINGTON: Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a US-brokered peace settlement on Friday (Aug 8) throughout a gathering with President Donald Trump, pledging to spice up financial ties after many years of battle.

    The deal between the South Caucasus rivals, if it holds, could be a significant accomplishment for the Trump administration and will unsettle Moscow, which considers the area a part of its sphere of affect.

    “It is a very long time – 35 years – they fought and now they’re pals, and they are going to be pals for a very long time,” Trump stated at a White Home signing ceremony alongside Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

    DECADES OF HOSTILITY

    Armenia and Azerbaijan have been at odds because the late Eighties when Nagorno-Karabakh, a mountainous Azerbaijani area with a majority ethnic Armenian inhabitants, broke away with assist from Armenia.

    Azerbaijan regained full management of the territory in 2023, prompting virtually all of its 100,000 ethnic Armenian residents to flee to Armenia.

    Trump stated the nations had dedicated to ending hostilities, opening diplomatic relations and recognising one another’s territorial integrity.

    STRATEGIC TRANSIT CORRIDOR

    The settlement grants the US unique improvement rights to a strategic transit hall via the South Caucasus. The White Home stated it could facilitate higher exports of power and different assets.

    Trump stated the US additionally signed separate agreements with every nation to increase cooperation on power, commerce and expertise, together with synthetic intelligence. Restrictions on defence cooperation between Azerbaijan and the US have been lifted.

    Aliyev and Pashinyan praised Trump’s position in ending the battle, with each leaders saying they’d nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize.
