Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned on Thursday (Aug 7) he is not going to compromise the pursuits of the nation’s farmers even when he has to pay a heavy worth for it, in his first feedback after US President Donald Trump’s salvo of a 50 per cent tariff on Indian items.

Trump introduced an additional 25 per cent tariff on the South Asian nation on Thursday, taking the full levy on Indian items being exported to the US to 50 per cent – among the many highest levied on any US buying and selling associate.

“For us, our farmers’ welfare is supreme,” Modi mentioned in a perform in New Delhi.

“India won’t ever compromise on the well-being of its farmers, dairy (sector) and fishermen. And I do know personally I must pay a heavy worth for it,” he mentioned.

Commerce talks between India and america collapsed after 5 rounds of negotiations over disagreement on opening India’s huge farm and dairy sectors and stopping Russian oil purchases.

Modi didn’t immediately check with the US tariffs or commerce talks.

The brand new tariff, efficient from Aug 28, was to penalise India for its buy of Russian oil, Trump has mentioned.

India’s international ministry has mentioned the choice was “extraordinarily unlucky”, and that “India will take all needed steps to guard its nationwide pursuits”.
