Fifteen years in the past there was nearly no marketplace for avocados in India, remembers Sunil Bopaiah.

Ripe fruit would fall off bushes and be eaten by canines, incomes avocados the unappetising title canine fruit, he says.

Bopaiah has been working in India’s plantation trade for 26 years, he is presently group supervisor at Cottanad Plantations, which grows cocoa, rubber, espresso, spices and fruits, together with avocado, within the hills of Wayanad within the southern Indian state of Kerala.

“We by no means planted avocado as our foremost crop. We launched it as a shade tree for espresso plantations, and solely later realised it may develop into a worthwhile enterprise,” he says.

He says the turning level was round 2011 when Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty mentioned she used avocado for skincare.

“In a single day, costs doubled after which saved rising,” he says.

Cottanad has responded to that demand by planting avocado bushes on 40 acres. Final 12 months they harvested between 10 and 15 tonnes of fruit. In three of 4 years time they hope to boost that to 40 to 50 tonnes.

There’s been quite a bit to study.

“We fully modified the way in which we develop avocados after studying from South African specialists. At the moment we use raised beds, wider spacing and completely different planting strategies as a result of avocado roots are extremely susceptible to ailments,” Bopaiah says.

There’s loads of scope for Indian farmers to step-up manufacturing.

“Once we studied the market, we discovered an enormous hole between demand and provide. India imports round 15,000 tonnes of avocados yearly, whereas home manufacturing is simply about 8,000–9,000 tonnes,” says Manilal Palliyath who helps promote India’s avocado trade.

He sees a giant alternative for farmers, notably as conventional crops have suffered.

“Espresso and pepper have suffered due to altering weather conditions, making diversification important for farmers.”
