    800 National Guard personnel mobilised for DC mission: Pentagon

    WASHINGTON: All 800 Nationwide Guard troops who had been ordered to the US capital Washington to help legislation enforcement personnel by President Donald Trump have now been mobilised, the Pentagon mentioned on Thursday (Aug 14).

    Trump ordered the deployment – which follows the same transfer throughout protests in Los Angeles in June – as a part of what he billed as a crackdown on crime in Washington, the place violent offences are in reality down.

    “As of at the moment, all 800 Military and Air Nationwide Guardsmen are mobilised … as a part of Joint Activity Drive DC, and they’re now right here in our capital,” Pentagon Press Secretary Kingsley Wilson advised journalists.

    They “will help the DC Metropolitan Police Division and federal legislation enforcement companions with monument safety, neighborhood security patrols, defending federal amenities and officers” and visitors management posts, Wilson mentioned.

    The troops “will stay till legislation and order has been restored within the District, as decided by the president”, she added.

    The US Military later mentioned the Nationwide Guard’s preliminary mission “is to offer a visual presence in key public areas, serving as a visual crime deterrent”.

    “They won’t arrest, search, or direct legislation enforcement,” however they “have the authority to quickly detain people to forestall imminent hurt,” the Military mentioned in a press release.

    The troops shall be geared up with protecting gear, it added, saying that weapons could be out there if wanted however would stay within the armory.
