The commerce division has began issuing licenses to Nvidia to export its H20 chips to China, a US official instructed Reuters on Friday (Aug 8), eradicating a major hurdle to the AI bellwether’s entry to a key market.

The US final month reversed an April ban on the sale of the H20 chip to China. The corporate had tailor-made the microprocessor specifically to the Chinese language market to adjust to the Biden-era AI chip export controls.

The curbs will slice US$8 billion off gross sales from its July quarter, the chipmaker has warned.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang met with Trump on Wednesday, two sources accustomed to the matter instructed Reuters.

A spokesperson for Nvidia declined remark. A White Home spokesman didn’t instantly reply to a request for remark.

The corporate mentioned in July it was submitting functions with the US authorities to renew gross sales to China of the H20 graphics processing unit, and had been assured it will get the licenses quickly.

It’s unclear what number of licenses could have been issued, which firms Nvidia is allowed to ship the H20s to, and the worth of the shipments allowed.

Nvidia disclosed in April that it anticipated a US$5.5 billion cost associated to the restrictions. In Might, Nvidia mentioned the precise first-quarter cost because of the H20 restrictions was US$1 billion lower than anticipated as a result of it was in a position to reuse some supplies.

The Monetary Occasions first reported Friday’s developments.

Nvidia mentioned final month that its merchandise have no “backdoors” that would allow remote access or control after China raised issues over potential safety dangers within the H20 chip.
