As a longtime resident of the Lake Metropolis neighborhood and as a volunteer with our native St. Vincent de Paul Society convention, I’m deeply saddened by the introduced closure of our neighborhood Fred Meyer. Its loss will current important obstacles for a lot of Lake Metropolis residents who rely upon it for groceries and pharmacy providers.

Lake Metropolis and Northgate have seen the speedy improvement of huge house complexes in recent times. Whereas these buildings are described as “inexpensive,” this usually means rents decrease than Seattle’s median charges — distinct from “low-income” housing, which is predicated on what tenants can truly afford. Many new residents wrestle with these so-called inexpensive rents, but lack different choices.

Compounding the problem, newer buildings provide minimal parking, designed to encourage reliance on public transit and cut back street congestion. This aligns with Seattle’s City Village idea — a commendable concept in idea. Nevertheless, when the final grocery retailer and pharmacy disappear, residents are left with out important providers inside strolling distance.

Lake Metropolis has already misplaced Walgreens and Bartell Medicine; each buildings sit vacant, reflecting a troubling sample. In the meantime, space companies have skilled a marked improve in theft, and whereas Fred Meyer administration took steps to handle this, there was little seen help from the town of Seattle.

The ripple results prolong to our small companies, additional destabilizing the neighborhood. Lake Metropolis contributes very important housing to our metropolis — housing that must be matched with accessible providers and companies.

I urge the town of Seattle to develop into extra actively concerned in supporting Lake Metropolis’s residents and companies. Particularly, the town should:

    ● Guarantee actually inexpensive housing — the place lease is predicated on actual capacity to pay — stays obtainable to those that want it most.

    ● Assist infrastructure that sustains day by day life, together with at minimal a grocery retailer and pharmacy, inside strolling distance of main house clusters.

    ● Encourage collaboration between neighborhood leaders and native legislation enforcement to handle felony exercise in a means that builds belief and ensures all residents and companies really feel secure. Restoring confidence requires openness, transparency and a dedication to honest, community-focused options.

I acknowledge these points are complicated and multilayered. Nevertheless, when a nationwide company centered solely on earnings can impression entry to meals and well being take care of a few of our metropolis’s most weak, it’s time for native authorities to behave.

Lake Metropolis deserves extra. Our rising neighborhood wants the help and partnership of metropolis leaders to make sure each resident has entry to important providers.

Patricia Olson: and her husband, Pat, have lived within the Lake Metropolis neighborhood for over 40 years. They’re proud to name this numerous and resilient neighborhood dwelling.
