Re: “Can Hakeem Jeffries break through?” (Might 11, Opinion):

U.S. Home Minority Chief Hakeem Jeffries is right in saying People are frightened about shedding Social Safety, Medicare and Medicaid, and concerning the “reckless and excessive funds” put ahead by Republicans. He’s improper to say there’s nothing extra pressing than stopping these funds proposals.

Many people are concurrently frightened concerning the U.S. democratic authorities falling into autocracy. Have been it not for the president’s makes an attempt to consolidate all energy in his presidency, we might not be having discussions about such excessive funds proposals. Republicans in Congress would really feel extra accountable to the voters who elected them than beholden to President Donald Trump.

I obtain surveys asking how necessary numerous points are to me. Not one asks: How frightened are you a few doable dictatorship within the U.S.? How necessary is upholding the Structure to you? How necessary is it that the federal government abides by duly adjudicated court docket rulings?

Kitchen-table points are necessary to voters. Democracy should survive for us to even have these debates. It could be useful if political leaders would level out that necessity if we need to save different issues that matter to us and have a say in how we’re ruled.

    Christa Quackenbush, Shoreline
