    Commentary: AI voice tech used in The Brutalist is nothing new – the backlash is about transparency

    READING, England: Director Brady Corbet’s gorgeous new movie, The Brutalist, has received three Golden Globes and stays a frontrunner for this 12 months’s Oscars regardless of an issue over its use of synthetic intelligence (AI) which erupted this week.     For The Brutalist, the accent problem confronted by Brody and Jones was actually brutal: The tough vowel sounds of the Hungarian language. It was even tough for Brody, whose mom was a Hungarian refugee who arrived within the US in 1956.

    Brody’s character is Laszlo Toth (roughly pronounced Laslo Tort), a Hungarian-Jewish architect who emigrates to the USA after the Holocaust. Jones performs his spouse, Erzsebet (roughly Air-zhay-bet), trapped again in Europe. 

    Through the movie’s post-production, the Budapest-born editor, David Jancso (pronounced Daavid Yancho), was on the lookout for accent perfection. So he reached for an AI device that might make Brody’s and Jones’s accents sound convincingly Hungarian.

    The controversy over this choice is shocking as a result of it’s nothing new. I’ve been researching the artistic use of AI in filmmaking for the previous six years. Not too long ago, the most important progress has been in voice AI. 

    Voice cloning know-how has been misused, inflicting outrage over unlicensed vocal replicas of Jennifer Aniston, Scarlett Johansson and David Attenborough. However The Brutalist made simply tiny alterations to 2 actors’ voices – and with consent – which compared is hardly surprising.
