    US approves temporary sale of stranded Russian oil to India

    WASHINGTON: America authorities on Thursday (Mar 5) briefly eased financial sanctions in opposition to Russia to permit Russian oil presently stranded at sea to be bought to India.

    The Treasury Division’s Workplace of International Property Management issued a Russia-related licence “authorising the supply and sale of crude oil and petroleum merchandise of Russian Federation origin loaded on vessels as of Mar 5, 2026, to India”, the Treasury mentioned in an announcement.

    It mentioned the transactions, together with these from vessels blocked by numerous sanctions regimes, are authorised by means of the top of the day on Apr 3, 2026.

    Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent mentioned the waiver was issued “to allow oil to maintain flowing into the worldwide market”.

    “This intentionally short-term measure is not going to present important monetary profit to the Russian authorities because it solely authorises transactions involving oil already stranded at sea,” he posted on X.

    The sale to India will “alleviate stress attributable to Iran’s attempt to take global energy hostage“, he added, despite the fact that India has mentioned it is going to cease buying Russian oil as a part of a commerce take care of the US.
