    Magnitude 7.4 quake strikes off Russian Far East, tsunami warning lifted

    MOSCOW: A 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Kamchatka in Russia’s Far East on Saturday (Sep 13), the USA Geological Survey (USGS) mentioned.

    There was no danger that the quake had triggered a tsunami, in keeping with the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PTWC).

    The USGS mentioned the quake hit 111km east of the Russian metropolis of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the executive centre of the Kamchatka area, at a depth of 39.5km.

    The survey earlier gave a magnitude of seven.5 earlier than downgrading it.

    The PTWC initially warned that “hazardous” waves of as much as 1m had been doable alongside some close by Russian coasts.

    The centre later mentioned “the tsunami risk … has now handed”.

    In July, one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded struck off the Kamchatka peninsula, triggering tsunamis as much as 4 metres excessive throughout the Pacific and sparking evacuations from Hawaii to Japan.

    The magnitude 8.8 quake was the biggest since 2011, when a magnitude 9.1 tremor off Japan brought on a tsunami that killed more than 15,000 people.

    July’s quake prompted authorities in Japan to order virtually two million folks to move to larger floor.

    Tsunami warnings had been additionally issued throughout the area, earlier than being rescinded or downgraded.
