    UK airports disrupted by radar fault in air traffic control system

    LONDON: A radar-related technical difficulty in Britain’s air visitors management system disrupted flights for over 4 hours at main airports in London and elsewhere on Wednesday (Jul 30), although the problem was later resolved and departures have been resuming.

    “Our methods are totally operational and air visitors capability is returning to regular,” NATS, the nation’s air visitors management supplier, stated in a publish on X.

    “Departures in any respect airports have resumed and we’re working with affected airways and airports to clear the backlog safely. We apologise to everybody affected by this difficulty.”

    The outage, introduced by NATS 20 minutes earlier, included Heathrow Airport, Britain’s largest and Europe’s busiest.

    In a later replace to Reuters, a NATS spokesperson stated it was a radar-related difficulty, “which was resolved by shortly switching to the again up system throughout which era we decreased visitors to make sure security.”

    “Flights at Heathrow have resumed following a technical difficulty on the NATS Swanwick air visitors management centre. We’re advising passengers to verify with their airline earlier than travelling,” an airport spokesperson stated.

    Gatwick Airport and Edinburgh Airport additionally stated operations have been resuming.

    London Metropolis Airport had earlier additionally reported disruption. It was not clear precisely how lengthy the outage had lasted.
